What this trial studies
This randomized controlled trial delivers individualized progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) as a non‑pharmacological intervention for patients on maintenance hemodialysis and compares outcomes to usual care. Participants who can follow instructions and score at least 4 on the Beck Depression Inventory are randomized to regular PMR sessions while receiving hemodialysis or to a control group. Primary outcomes include changes in depressive symptoms and fatigue measured by standard scales, with assessments at baseline and after the intervention period. The study excludes patients with major psychiatric diagnoses, significant sensory or cognitive impairments, major musculoskeletal limitations, or regular prior practice of relaxation therapies and is conducted at Istanbul Aydın University.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults who receive regular hemodialysis, can understand and perform relaxation exercises, and score 4 or higher on the Beck Depression Inventory are ideal candidates.
Not a fit: Patients with diagnosed major psychiatric disorders, significant hearing/visual/cognitive impairments, musculoskeletal inability to perform the exercises, or those already practicing relaxation/yoga/meditation regularly are unlikely to benefit from this intervention.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, regular progressive muscle relaxation could reduce depressive symptoms and fatigue and improve daily functioning for people on hemodialysis.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies of PMR and other relaxation techniques in dialysis and chronic disease populations have shown modest improvements in mood and fatigue, though results have been mixed across trials.
