What this trial studies
This pilot study aims to enhance the initiation of medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) among individuals seeking inpatient treatment at Maryland Treatment Centers. By leveraging peer recovery support services (PRSS), the study seeks to address the low rates of MOUD initiation and retention, which are critical for reducing the risk of relapse and overdose. The intervention will focus on individuals diagnosed with opioid use disorder who are currently in residential treatment, aiming to improve their access to and engagement with MOUD. The study builds on an existing parent grant that focuses on retention in treatment, expanding its scope to include initiation.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults aged 18 and older who meet the diagnostic criteria for opioid use disorder and are currently seeking inpatient treatment.
Not a fit: Patients who have recently been prescribed maintenance doses of buprenorphine or methadone, or received extended-release formulations of buprenorphine or naltrexone, may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could significantly increase the number of patients who initiate and maintain treatment for opioid use disorder, ultimately reducing overdose deaths.
How similar studies have performed: While peer recovery support services have shown promise in emergency settings, this specific approach to improve MOUD initiation in residential treatment is novel and has not been extensively tested.
