What this trial studies
This research aims to implement a community intervention targeting internalized homophobia, internalized racism, and HIV stigma to enhance PrEP initiation among Black sexual minority men (BSMM) in Prince George's County, MD. Participants will engage in events designed to reduce stigma and foster community support. The study will compare the outcomes of those who participate in the intervention with a control group to assess differences in PrEP initiation and adherence rates. The focus is on understanding and addressing the unique barriers faced by BSMM in this region, which has a high incidence of HIV despite available prevention resources.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are Black, HIV-negative men aged 18 and older who either reside in or have a sexual partner in Prince George's County, Maryland.
Not a fit: Patients who are HIV positive or refuse HIV testing will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this intervention could significantly increase PrEP uptake among Black sexual minority men, thereby reducing HIV transmission rates in this high-risk population.
How similar studies have performed: While there is limited literature specifically addressing PrEP use among BSMM in this region, similar interventions targeting stigma reduction have shown promise in improving health outcomes in other populations.
