Pain medication needs in the first hours after elective surgery in the PACU
Factors Influencing Analgesic Consumption in the Early Postoperative Period: A Prospective Observational Study in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit
Dr Abdurrahman Yurtaslan Ankara Oncology Training and Research Hospital · NCT07547618
This study will see which patient, surgery, and anesthesia factors are linked to how much pain medicine adults need immediately after elective surgery while in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU).

What this trial studies
This is a single-center, prospective observational study at a tertiary oncology hospital PACU enrolling adult patients after elective surgery. Researchers will record analgesic consumption in the early postoperative period alongside patient characteristics, surgical details, and anesthesia-related variables. No additional interventions will be performed and all perioperative care will follow routine clinical practice. The goal is to identify factors associated with higher or lower analgesic requirements to inform tailored pain management strategies.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults aged 18 and older undergoing elective surgery who are admitted to the PACU and able to give informed consent are eligible.
Not a fit: Patients undergoing emergency surgery, those transferred directly to intensive care, pediatric patients, or anyone with a PACU stay under 30 minutes or unable to communicate are unlikely to benefit from participation.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the findings could help clinicians personalize early postoperative pain control to reduce pain, speed recovery, and lower complications related to inadequate analgesia.
How similar studies have performed: Previous observational studies have identified patient and procedure factors linked to postoperative analgesic use, but results vary by setting and population.
