Outcomes of adults with cirrhosis admitted to the general ICU (2014–2024)
Prognosis of Cirrhotic Patients Admitted to the General Intensive Care Unit Between 2014 and 2024: a Regional Retrospective Multicentre Cohort Study
This project will see if adults with cirrhosis admitted to the ICU from 2014 to 2024 had better survival, access to liver transplantation, and ICU care practices than reported before 2014.

What this trial studies
This is a regional retrospective multicentre cohort analysis of adult patients with cirrhosis admitted to general intensive care units between January 2014 and December 2024. Medical records from a tertiary centre (CHU de Besançon) and affiliated primary hospitals will be reviewed for admission severity, ICU interventions, application of guideline-based practices, access to liver transplantation, and outcomes including survival. The analysis will compare current outcomes and care practices with data reported in the literature prior to 2014 and will look for variability in patient phenotype and outcomes related to centre resources. No prospective interventions are planned; all adults with clinically or histologically confirmed cirrhosis admitted during the period are eligible for inclusion.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults (age ≥18) with clinically or histologically confirmed cirrhosis who were admitted to the general intensive care unit at the participating hospitals between January 2014 and December 2024.
Not a fit: Patients under 18, those without cirrhosis, or patients treated outside the participating hospital network would not be included and would not directly benefit from this analysis.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the findings could identify care practices that improve survival and transplant access and guide better ICU management for people with cirrhosis.
How similar studies have performed: Previous retrospective cohort studies, including the investigators' earlier pre-2014 publication, have reported improved ICU survival and transplant access for some cirrhotic populations, but results vary by region and centre.
