What this trial studies
This initiative aims to provide effective treatment to all known cases of Hepatitis C in Iceland, utilizing direct acting antiviral agents to halt the transmission of the virus. The program will monitor both short-term and long-term outcomes, including virological response rates and compliance over an initial treatment phase of up to three years. Additionally, the incidence of new HCV infections and long-term complications such as cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma will be tracked for up to 15 years. The goal is to significantly reduce the disease burden associated with chronic Hepatitis C infection.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this initiative are HCV positive individuals aged 18 years and older who reside in Iceland and are covered by the Icelandic Health Insurance.
Not a fit: Patients under 18 years of age or those unable to provide informed consent will not benefit from this program.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this program could lead to a substantial reduction in new Hepatitis C infections and long-term health complications for patients.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown success with similar treatment as prevention approaches for Hepatitis C, indicating potential for positive outcomes in this initiative.
