Mouth bacteria and artery plaque in people undergoing endarterectomy
Bacteria in Dental Plaque and Atheroma Plaque
This research will see if the bacteria found in dental plaque are the same as the bacteria found in artery (atheroma) plaque in people having endarterectomy.

What this trial studies
Periodontitis can release bacteria or bacterial components into the bloodstream, and prior work has detected oral microbes in atheroma tissue. In this observational study, investigators will collect dental plaque and atheroma plaque samples from patients undergoing endarterectomy and analyze them for specific periodontal pathogens and bacterial markers. Participants will be grouped using the new periodontal classification, and bacterial counts and frequencies will be compared across groups. Demographic and clinical data will be related to microbial findings to explore associations.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are people scheduled for endarterectomy who are not receiving chemotherapy and have not had prior endarterectomy for the same condition.
Not a fit: People with active systemic infections, severe heart disease that precludes participation, or those not undergoing endarterectomy are unlikely to benefit from this observational protocol.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the findings could clarify whether oral bacteria are linked to artery plaque and help guide prevention or screening efforts that reduce cardiovascular risk.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have detected periodontal bacteria in atheroma plaques, so the approach has precedent though causal relationships remain unproven.
