What this trial studies
This project aims to develop an adaptive ecological momentary intervention (a-EMI) specifically for young adults who use both marijuana and alcohol simultaneously. The intervention, titled 'Smartphone App For Effectively Reducing Risk (SAFERR)', will leverage self-regulation and social cognitive theories to test various strategies for reducing negative consequences associated with simultaneous use. The study will recruit 136 participants from Kaiser Permanente Hawaii and assess the efficacy of different intervention components through a fractional factorial experimental design, with follow-up assessments at one and three months post-intervention.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are young adults aged 18-30 who reside in Hawaii, report simultaneous use of alcohol and marijuana, and have experienced negative consequences from their substance use.
Not a fit: Patients who have undergone substance use treatment within the past three months may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this intervention could significantly reduce the negative consequences associated with simultaneous alcohol and marijuana use in young adults.
How similar studies have performed: While interventions targeting simultaneous substance use are limited, the use of mobile technology for behavioral interventions has shown promise in other studies.
