Mindful Journey: a smartphone mindfulness program for opioid use disorder and chronic pain
Mindfulness-Based Ecological Momentary Intervention for Co-Occurring Opioid Use Disorder and Chronic Pain: A Pilot Study
This project will test whether the Mindful Journey smartphone app can help adults on medication-assisted treatment for opioid use disorder who have chronic pain use brief mindfulness exercises to manage cravings and pain.

What this trial studies
This pilot interventional project delivers a smartphone-based ecological momentary intervention called Mindful Journey that uses brief, video-based exercises to teach mindful acceptance and savoring skills. The app combines ecological momentary assessments with just-in-time prompts to deliver short mindfulness practices when participants report high-risk moments for craving or pain. The primary focus is on feasibility and acceptability in adults enrolled in medication-assisted treatment for opioid use disorder who report bothersome chronic non-malignant pain. Study procedures occur through sites at Arizona State University with usage, engagement, and preliminary symptom signals tracked over the intervention period.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults (18+) who are fluent in English, enrolled in medication-assisted treatment for opioid use disorder, report bothersome chronic non-malignant pain, and own a smartphone are ideal candidates.
Not a fit: People with chronic malignant pain or systemic inflammatory disease, those reporting psychotic disorder symptoms, people not in medication-assisted treatment, not fluent in English, or without a smartphone are unlikely to benefit from this intervention.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the app could give people on medication treatment quick, in-the-moment mindfulness tools to better cope with pain and reduce opioid craving or relapse risk.
How similar studies have performed: Mindfulness-based interventions have shown promise for pain and for substance use separately, but just-in-time smartphone mindfulness interventions specifically targeting co-occurring opioid use disorder and chronic pain are largely novel and untested.
Eligibility criteria
