Measuring muscle strength and size in people with inflammatory bowel disease.

Evaluation of Sarcopenia in Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Observational Sakarya University · NCT07441447

This project will test whether ultrasound measurements of selected muscles, together with handgrip strength, can serve as a practical alternative to CT-based muscle measurements for adults with inflammatory bowel disease.

What this trial studies

This prospective, single-center observational project enrolls adults with confirmed IBD to measure muscle strength and muscle mass using handgrip dynamometry and targeted muscle ultrasonography. Selected muscles (rectus femoris, vastus intermedius, gastrocnemius medialis, biceps brachii, rectus abdominis, and internal oblique) will be measured for thickness and cross-sectional area by ultrasound. For participants with an abdominal CT within the previous six months, L3 skeletal muscle cross-sectional area will be measured from archived images to compare with ultrasound results. The primary outcome is the correlation and agreement between ultrasound-based measures and CT-derived L3 muscle area.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults (≥18 years) with a confirmed diagnosis of IBD who can provide informed consent, undergo handgrip testing and muscle ultrasound, and have an abdominal CT performed within the previous six months are ideal candidates.

Not a fit: Patients with known neuromuscular disorders, major orthopedic limitations affecting strength testing, abdominal wall defects, pregnancy, or incomplete clinical or imaging data are unlikely to benefit from this protocol.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, ultrasound could offer a fast, radiation-free, and more accessible way to monitor muscle mass in patients with IBD.

How similar studies have performed: Ultrasound has shown promising agreement with CT for muscle measurement in other patient groups, but validation specifically in IBD populations remains limited.
