Measuring muscle fatigue in people with cystic fibrosis using a mobile phone app

Reliability and Discriminant Validity of a Mobile App for Detecting Muscle Fatigue in People With Cystic Fibrosis

Observational Universidad Católica San Antonio de Murcia · NCT07135869

What this trial studies

This observational study uses a mobile app that analyzes video of the one-minute sit-to-stand (1minSTS) test to derive time, velocity, and power as measures of fatigability. At least 34 people with cystic fibrosis and 34 matched healthy controls will perform chair rises for 60 seconds with measurements taken before, immediately after, and one minute after the test, alongside heart rate and Borg CR10 ratings. The protocol is repeated after 30 minutes to assess test-retest reliability, and differences between pre/post measures will quantify performance fatigability and recovery. Researchers will compare CF and control groups to see if fatigability remains elevated in contemporary CF care and whether the app provides reliable, low-cost measurements.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are clinically stable adults with cystic fibrosis who are not on oxygen during testing, have had no medication changes or pulmonary exacerbations in the prior two weeks, and have no musculoskeletal issues or prior lung/liver transplant.

Not a fit: Patients with recent exacerbations or medication changes, those requiring oxygen during exercise, people with recent lung or liver transplants, or individuals with musculoskeletal conditions limiting chair rises are unlikely to benefit.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the app could offer a low-cost, clinic-friendly way to monitor muscle fatigability in people with cystic fibrosis.

How similar studies have performed: Previous small studies and lab-based comparisons suggest video- or app-based sit-to-stand metrics can be reliable, but large, contemporary comparisons specifically in cystic fibrosis are novel.
