What this trial studies
This observational study aims to develop and validate a new instrument for measuring family engagement in intensive care units (ICUs). It will involve 198 family members across four Canadian hospitals over a 12-week period, focusing on understanding how family activation and engagement relate to patient-centered outcomes. The study will also explore various demographic factors that may influence family engagement, such as age, relationship, and ethnicity. Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are family members of patients admitted to the ICU who can participate in English or French and are 18 years or older.
Not a fit: Patients who have an ICU stay of less than 24 hours or whose family members have already participated in the study may not benefit.

Inclusion Criteria: * Family member of patient admitted to the intensive care units * Able to participate in English or French * Age 18 years old or older Exclusion Criteria: * ICU stays less than 24 hours * Another family member has already participated in the study
