What this trial studies

This observational study aims to develop and validate a new instrument for measuring family engagement in intensive care units (ICUs). It will involve 198 family members across four Canadian hospitals over a 12-week period, focusing on understanding how family activation and engagement relate to patient-centered outcomes. The study will also explore various demographic factors that may influence family engagement, such as age, relationship, and ethnicity. By capturing diverse practice patterns and cultural differences, the study seeks to provide insights into family-centered care in critical settings.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are family members of patients admitted to the ICU who can participate in English or French and are 18 years or older.

Not a fit: Patients who have an ICU stay of less than 24 hours or whose family members have already participated in the study may not benefit.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance family involvement in patient care, leading to improved outcomes for patients in the ICU.

How similar studies have performed: While there is limited research specifically on measuring family engagement in ICUs, similar studies on family-centered care have shown promising results.
