Measuring antioxidant activity and oxidative stress in patients undergoing eye surgery

Effects of Laser Species and Ocular Antioxidant Activity on Postoperative Inflammation, Oxidative Stress and Visual Prognosis in Patients Undergoing Ophthalmic Surgery - a Comparative Study.

Observational Chang Gung Memorial Hospital · NCT06743594

What this trial studies

This observational trial investigates the effects of novel laser refractive surgery techniques and laser-assisted cataract surgery on postoperative inflammation and recovery by measuring oxidative stress levels. It aims to assess total reactive oxygen species, antioxidant capacity, and ascorbic acid in the eyes of patients undergoing these procedures. All participants will undergo a series of eye examinations to evaluate their visual acuity, intraocular pressure, and other ocular metrics. The study seeks to determine if new laser technologies are beneficial for patients with low antioxidant activity.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 20 and older who are scheduled for corneal refractive surgery or cataract surgery.

Not a fit: Patients with eye infections, severe retinal diseases, or significant eye injuries may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved recovery and reduced inflammation for patients undergoing ophthalmic surgeries.

How similar studies have performed: While the approach of measuring oxidative stress in surgical patients is not widely tested, similar studies have shown promising results in other surgical contexts.
