What this trial studies
This observational study follows patients aged 65 and older with one or more chronic diseases to see how polypharmacy relates to their prognosis over two years. Participants at Xijing Hospital will complete periodic online surveys about their medications, symptoms, and health events. No experimental treatments are given; researchers will analyze survey data to link medication burden with outcomes such as hospitalization, disease progression, or mortality. The goal is to identify medication patterns associated with poorer prognosis and inform safer prescribing for older adults.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal participants are people aged 65 or older with at least one chronic disease, stable vital signs, and willingness to complete online surveys over two years.
Not a fit: People without chronic diseases, those with unstable vital signs, or individuals unwilling or unable to participate in online surveys are unlikely to gain benefit from this project.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the findings could help clinicians simplify medication regimens and reduce harm, improving quality of life and health outcomes for older patients.
How similar studies have performed: Previous observational research has repeatedly linked polypharmacy to worse outcomes in older adults, while interventional deprescribing studies have shown mixed but sometimes positive results.
