Making a digital twin of the lung using photon-counting chest CT and clinical data

LUCE: LUng Cancer (r)Evolution

Observational Casa di Cura Dott. Pederzoli · NCT07517393

This project will try to use adults' clinical records and non-contrast photon-counting chest CT scans to find lung nodules, tumors, and other lung diseases and to build a virtual 'digital twin' of the lung.

What this trial studies

This observational project will collect and analyze past and future clinical, anamnestic, functional, and biological data from adults who undergo non-contrast photon-counting chest CT at the enrolling center. Physicians will decide on contrast use as needed, and enrolled patients will provide written informed consent. Collected data will be processed with artificial intelligence methods to attempt to create a virtual 'digital twin' of the lung and to track suspicious lung changes over time alongside clinical and laboratory parameters. Enrollment will run for 12 months at the single participating site in Peschiera del Garda, Verona.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults aged 18 or older who are scheduled for a non-contrast photon-counting chest CT at the study site and can give written informed consent are the intended participants.

Not a fit: People who do not have sufficient medical/anamnestic data, who will not undergo photon-counting chest CT, or who seek direct therapeutic treatment are unlikely to gain direct benefit from this observational project.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the work could help detect and track lung abnormalities earlier and enable virtual simulations that support safer, more personalized care decisions.

How similar studies have performed: AI-based analysis of CT scans and CT-based nodule detection have shown promise in research settings, but building a clinically useful 'digital twin' of the lung from photon-counting CT remains a novel and largely unproven approach.
