Lung cancer screening program for high-risk individuals in Mexico

Lung Cancer Early Detection With Low-dose Computed Tomography in High-risk Individuals: Experience in Mexico

Observational Instituto Nacional de Cancerologia de Mexico · NCT06535451

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to detect early-stage lung cancer in Mexican individuals aged 50 and older who are current or former heavy smokers, non-smokers exposed to significant wood smoke, or diagnosed with COPD. Participants will undergo annual low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) scans, lung function tests, and serum biomarker assessments over three years, with follow-up lasting up to ten years. The study also seeks to evaluate the psychological impact of screening and the association of lung cancer with immunologic biomarkers.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include individuals over 50 years old who are current or former heavy smokers, non-smokers exposed to wood smoke, or those diagnosed with COPD.

Not a fit: Patients with a history of any type of cancer within the last five years or those unable to undergo tomography due to physical limitations may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this program could lead to earlier detection of lung cancer, improving treatment outcomes and survival rates for high-risk populations.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown success with similar lung cancer screening approaches, particularly using low-dose CT in high-risk populations.
