What this trial studies
This is a prospective, longitudinal cohort that will follow successive first-year health students at the University of Orléans for up to 10 years to identify risk factors for depression. Participants aged 18 and over will be invited by email to complete online questionnaires, including the validated CIDI-SF to screen for major depressive disorder, with data collection repeated across cohorts. The study plans to include 5,000–10,000 students and will compare those who continue in the medical program with peers who were not accepted into the second year. Secondary measures will capture anxiety, suicidal thoughts, and substance use to contextualize mental health trajectories.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Eligible participants are students aged 18 or older who were enrolled in the first year of health studies at the University of Orléans.
Not a fit: People under 18, non-French speakers, those under legal guardianship or deprived of liberty, and students not enrolled at the University of Orléans are not eligible and would not directly benefit from this cohort's findings.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the findings could help universities target prevention and support programs to reduce depression, suicidal thoughts, and substance-related harms among medical students.
How similar studies have performed: Questionnaire-based cohort studies in student populations have previously identified financial hardship and other modifiable risk factors for depression, so the approach is established even though this 10-year Orléans cohort is new.
