Link between artery stiffness and lung and other body features in ankylosing spondylitis

Investigation of the Relationship Between Arterial Stiffness and Pulmonary and Extrapulmonary Features in Patients With Ankylosing Spondylitis

Observational Kirsehir Ahi Evran Universitesi · NCT06739369

We will try to see if stiffer arteries are linked with lung problems and other body features in adults aged 18–65 who have ankylosing spondylitis and are on stable medication.

What this trial studies

This observational study will compare measures of arterial stiffness with pulmonary and other clinical features in people with ankylosing spondylitis. Eligible participants (age 18–65) must meet ASAS criteria and be on stable medication for at least three months; people with uncontrolled cardiopulmonary disease, recent surgery, malignancy, or pregnancy are excluded. Participants will attend the single site at Kirsehir Ahi Evran University for non-invasive vascular and pulmonary assessments and routine clinical examinations. The goal is to characterize patterns and relationships between vascular stiffness and disease manifestations rather than to test a treatment.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults 18–65 with ankylosing spondylitis by ASAS criteria who have been on stable medication for at least three months and can attend the study site are ideal candidates.

Not a fit: People with uncontrolled cardiopulmonary disease, recent surgery, active malignancy, pregnancy, or who cannot complete the required assessments are unlikely to benefit from participation.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If a link is confirmed, the findings could help identify patients at higher cardiovascular or pulmonary risk and guide monitoring or preventive care.

How similar studies have performed: Previous research has reported increased arterial stiffness in people with ankylosing spondylitis, so this work builds on existing observational evidence rather than testing a new therapy.
