What this trial studies

This double-blind, randomized controlled trial will recruit patients with primary hypertension from the Cardiology Outpatient Clinic at Ardahan State Hospital. Participants are randomized to an experimental group receiving 12 lavender oil inhalation sessions (three times weekly for one month) or to a control group receiving routine care. Outcomes include anxiety measured by the Beck Anxiety Inventory, sleep quality measured by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and blood pressure recorded via the Hypertension Diagnostic Form. Statistical comparisons between groups will determine whether lavender inhalation produces changes in these measures.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults diagnosed with primary hypertension who have no allergy to lavender, no olfactory impairment or psychiatric disorders, are not using tobacco or other herbal aromatherapy, and are willing to attend clinic visits and participate.

Not a fit: People with secondary hypertension or other chronic diseases, pregnant or breastfeeding individuals, those with sleep disorders like obstructive sleep apnea, tobacco users, or anyone allergic to lavender are unlikely to be eligible or to benefit from this intervention.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, inhaled lavender could offer a simple, low-risk way to reduce anxiety, improve sleep, and possibly produce modest improvements in blood pressure for people with primary hypertension.

How similar studies have performed: Previous smaller trials and reviews have reported that lavender can ease anxiety and improve sleep in some people, but high-quality evidence for blood pressure lowering in patients with hypertension is limited and mixed.
