Investigating the role of corneal nerves in dry eye disease

Association Between Corneal Sensitivity, Nerve Morphology, Tear Film Homeostasis and Dry Eye Symptoms

Observational University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland · NCT06841471

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to explore the relationship between corneal nerve function and morphology with tear film instability and the loss of ocular surface homeostasis in patients with dry eye disease (DED). It will assess how these factors may differ based on the severity of dry eye symptoms. Participants will be divided into two groups: those diagnosed with DED and those without. The study will involve careful measurement and observation of corneal nerve characteristics in relation to dry eye conditions.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include individuals diagnosed with dry eye disease as well as those without the condition for comparative analysis.

Not a fit: Patients with systemic diseases affecting ocular health or those who have had prior eye surgeries may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance understanding of dry eye disease and lead to improved diagnostic and treatment strategies for patients.

How similar studies have performed: While the specific approach of this study may be novel, previous studies have indicated a correlation between corneal nerve health and dry eye symptoms.
