Investigating the link between immune thrombocytopenia and cancer

Molecular Analysis of Thrombocytopenia and Cancer (MATAC): Investigating Antigenic Mimicry Between Platelets and Tumor Cells in Patients With Immune Thrombocytopenia (ITP) Associated With Cancer

Observational University Hospital, Bordeaux · NCT06444477

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to explore the relationship between immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) and various cancers, particularly focusing on the hypothesis that tumor cells may trigger an autoimmune response against platelets. By collecting retrospective data from multiple centers, the study will analyze patient demographics, treatment histories, and outcomes related to both ITP and cancer. The goal is to better understand how chronic expression of certain proteins by tumor cells could lead to the development and persistence of ITP in cancer patients.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adult patients who have been diagnosed with both immune thrombocytopenia and cancer, with the onset of ITP occurring within six months of the cancer diagnosis.

Not a fit: Patients who do not have a diagnosis of both ITP and cancer will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide insights that lead to improved management and treatment strategies for patients suffering from ITP associated with cancer.

How similar studies have performed: While the association between ITP and hematologic malignancies is well-documented, the exploration of this link with solid tumors is less established, making this study a novel investigation.
