What this trial studies
This observational study aims to explore the relationship between non-communicable diseases, specifically diabetes and metabolic syndrome, and the risk of malaria in adults in Cameroon. Participants will be followed over one year, with blood and stool samples collected at four time points to assess the presence of malaria parasites and intestinal worms. The study will compare individuals with type 2 diabetes to those without diabetes to understand how diabetes may influence susceptibility to malaria and other parasitic infections. The findings could help inform public health strategies for managing chronic diseases in malaria-endemic regions.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults aged 21 years and older diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
Not a fit: Patients who are pregnant will not benefit from this study due to exclusion criteria.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved public health strategies for managing diabetes and malaria in affected populations.
How similar studies have performed: While some studies have explored the relationship between diabetes and parasitic infections, this specific investigation in the context of Cameroon is novel and untested.
