What this trial studies

This observational study aims to assess the prevalence of respiratory muscle sarcopenia in individuals diagnosed with systemic sclerosis. It evaluates participants' body composition, hand grip strength, and physical performance through various tests, including the 5 repetition sit-and-stand test and the Timed up-and-go test. The study also measures respiratory muscle strength to understand the impact of sarcopenia on respiratory function in these patients. By utilizing established guidelines for diagnosing sarcopenia, the study seeks to provide insights into the relationship between systemic sclerosis and respiratory muscle health.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are individuals aged 18-75 who have been diagnosed with systemic sclerosis and are clinically stable.

Not a fit: Patients with neurological or musculoskeletal issues that affect muscle strength measurement or those with severe infections or other rheumatologic diseases may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance understanding of respiratory complications in systemic sclerosis, leading to better management strategies for affected patients.

How similar studies have performed: While the specific focus on respiratory muscle sarcopenia in systemic sclerosis may be novel, related studies on sarcopenia and muscle strength have shown promising results in other populations.
