What this trial studies

This observational study aims to assess the risk of all-cause mortality, cause-specific mortality, and cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in adults diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) compared to those with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and population controls. It will analyze data from the Swedish National Diabetes Registers, linking lifestyle factors, clinical characteristics, and treatment outcomes to understand the prognosis of adult-onset T1D. The study will also estimate life expectancy based on different ages at T1D diagnosis, providing insights into the long-term health implications of this condition.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults aged 18 years and older diagnosed with type 1 diabetes between 2001 and 2020.

Not a fit: Patients diagnosed with secondary diabetes due to pancreatic cancer or those with a recent history of digestive system cancers may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide critical insights into the prognosis of adult-onset type 1 diabetes, potentially leading to improved management strategies and better health outcomes for patients.

How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have indicated higher mortality risks in adult-onset T1D compared to T2D, suggesting that this study builds on existing knowledge but focuses on a less explored age group.

Eligibility criteria

Show full inclusion / exclusion criteria
Inclusion Criteria:

* people with adult-onset (≥18 years) T1D diagnosed in 2001-2020 from the National Diabetes Register
* all T2D cases diagnosed at age ≥18 years in 2001-2020 recorded in the National Diabetes Register

Everyone with T1D was matched by age, sex, and county to 50 population controls from the Total Population Register.

Exclusion Criteria:

* To avoid diabetes secondary to pancreatic cancer, we excluded people diagnosed with cancer in the digestive system 1 year prior to diabetes diagnosis and with pancreatic cancer as the underlying cause of death.
