Investigating metabolic changes in patients with obesity undergoing bariatric surgery

Metabolomics and Bariatric Surgery in Patients With Metabolically Unhealthy Obesity: Advancing Precision Medicine for the Treatment of Obesity

Observational Parc de Salut Mar · NCT06297928

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to explore metabolic changes in individuals with varying metabolic health statuses who are undergoing bariatric surgery. It will assess whether metabolic markers can predict the transition from metabolically unhealthy to healthy obesity post-surgery and examine the metabolic differences between these groups before and after the procedure. Participants will undergo routine evaluations and blood tests, including metabolomic analysis, to track changes in their metabolic profiles. The study will involve a multidisciplinary team and will not require additional visits beyond standard clinical practice.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults aged 18 to 60 with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or greater, or 35 or greater with obesity-related comorbidities, who are undergoing bariatric surgery.

Not a fit: Patients with a history of previous bariatric surgery, severe psychiatric disorders, or contraindications for major abdominal surgery may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could help identify metabolic markers that predict health outcomes after bariatric surgery, potentially improving patient selection and treatment strategies.

How similar studies have performed: While there have been studies on metabolic changes post-bariatric surgery, this specific focus on metabolomics in relation to metabolic health status is relatively novel.
