Investigating intravascular injection during trigeminal nerve blocks

Incidence of Intravascular (IV) Injection During Trigeminal Nerve Blocks and Impact of Needle Types to the IV Uptake: A Prospective Cohort Study

Seoul National University · NCT04467398

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to assess the incidence of intravascular injection that occurs during trigeminal nerve blocks. Patients scheduled for these procedures will be randomized into two groups based on the type of needle used: the tuohy needle group and the quincke needle group. The study will monitor and record any instances of intravascular injection during the nerve block procedures. This research could provide valuable insights into the safety and efficacy of different needle techniques in managing facial pain.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are patients scheduled to undergo trigeminal nerve blocks due to facial pain.

Not a fit: Patients who may not benefit from this study include those who refuse participation, are pregnant, have coagulopathy, have local or systemic infections, have allergies to the injectate, or have anatomical deformations of the skull.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance the safety of trigeminal nerve block procedures for patients suffering from facial pain.

How similar studies have performed: While this study focuses on a specific aspect of nerve blocks, similar studies have shown varying success in improving procedural safety and outcomes.
