What this trial studies

This observational study aims to explore the relationship between visceral obesity, adipose inflammation, and the development of obesity-related diseases such as cardiometabolic disease, liver cirrhosis, and chronic kidney disease. The researchers hypothesize that impaired production of specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs) leads to increased inflammation and fibrosis in adipose tissue, contributing to systemic health issues. The study will compare the pro-resolving lipid profiles of obese individuals with and without metabolic diseases and examine the effects of anti-inflammatory agents on human adipose macrophages in ex vivo cultures.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are obese individuals with a BMI between 35-55 kg/m2 and lean individuals with a BMI between 18.5-24.9.

Not a fit: Patients undergoing medical treatment with NSAIDs, corticosteroids, or immune-suppressants, as well as those with smoking or alcohol abuse issues, may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to new therapeutic strategies for managing obesity-related diseases by targeting inflammation.

How similar studies have performed: While the specific approach of investigating pro-resolving mediators in obesity-related diseases is relatively novel, similar studies have shown promising results in understanding the role of inflammation in metabolic disorders.
