Investigating cancer incidence in Parkinson's patients with a specific gene mutation

Study on the Incidence of Malignant Neoplasms in Patients with Parkinson's Disease and Heterozygous Mutation of the GBA Gene

Observational Azienda USL Reggio Emilia - IRCCS · NCT06814431

This study looks at whether people with Parkinson's disease who have a specific gene mutation are more likely to develop cancer compared to those without the mutation and the general population.

What this trial studies

This multicenter retrospective observational study examines the incidence of malignant neoplasms in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) who carry heterozygous mutations in the GBA1 gene. It compares these patients to those with idiopathic PD and the general population using data from local cancer registries. The study aims to determine if there is a higher incidence of cancer among GBA1 mutation carriers and to characterize the types of cancers present. Approximately 3000 PD patients will be included, with a focus on understanding the relationship between genetic factors and cancer risk.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults over 18 years old diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, particularly those with GBA1 mutations.

Not a fit: Patients with uncertain diagnoses of Parkinson's disease may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide insights into the cancer risks associated with genetic mutations in Parkinson's disease, potentially leading to improved monitoring and treatment strategies.

How similar studies have performed: While there is growing evidence of increased cancer risk in patients with Gaucher disease, this specific investigation into GBA1 mutations in Parkinson's disease is relatively novel.
