What this trial studies

This prospective clinical study will use intraoral scans (including white-light imaging and caries-detection features) and CBCT to identify dental plaque and caries in adults. Plaque detection on IOS will be compared against plaque-disclosing agents, while caries detection on IOS and CBCT will be compared with conventional visual inspection and bitewing radiography. Participants must be able to tolerate an intraoral exam and have at least 20 teeth present. Diagnostic performance measures such as sensitivity and specificity will be calculated to compare the imaging approaches with current clinical reference standards.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults 18–70 years old who have at least 20 teeth, are not pregnant, and can give informed consent.

Not a fit: Patients with conditions that prevent proper intraoral examination (for example severe gag reflex or limited mouth opening), those with fewer than 20 teeth, pregnant people, or those unable to consent are unlikely to benefit from participation.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this could enable quicker, noninvasive digital checks for plaque and early cavities that improve detection and streamline dental care.

How similar studies have performed: Some prior studies have shown promise for intraoral scanners in detecting caries and plaque, but findings are mixed and combining CBCT for this purpose is less well established.
