What this trial studies

This study aims to pilot cognitive enhancement therapy (CET) for individuals aged 16-35 with early phase psychosis (EPP) who also have problematic alcohol use. Participants will be randomized to receive either CET or standard treatment, which includes brief psychoeducation about substance use. The study will assess clinical outcomes as well as social determinants of health, such as return to school or work, to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention. By focusing on both clinical and social recovery metrics, the study seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of the impact of alcohol on recovery from psychosis.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are individuals aged 16-35 with a primary psychotic disorder and problematic alcohol use.

Not a fit: Patients with another substance use disorder, other than nicotine dependence, may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this intervention could significantly improve recovery outcomes for young individuals with early phase psychosis by reducing alcohol consumption.

How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have indicated that addressing substance use in psychosis treatment can improve recovery outcomes, suggesting potential success for this approach.
