Infections after esophagectomy for cancer
Infectious Complications, Associated Factors, and Prognosis After Esophagectomy for Cancer: A French, Multicenter, Retrospective Study - CIFO-study
This project will look at how often and what kinds of infections people admitted to the ICU after esophagectomy for cancer get, and which patient or care factors are linked to worse outcomes.

What this trial studies
This is a retrospective, multicenter, pseudonymized review of medical records for patients admitted to intensive care after esophagectomy for cancer between January 1, 2017 and December 31, 2024. Investigators at each participating center will screen records, obtain non-opposition from living patients, and enter standardized clinical and outcome data into secure local databases. The study will describe the incidence and types of postoperative infections (including pneumonia), identify patient- and care-related risk factors, and analyze their impact on prognosis and hospital resource use. The goal is to highlight modifiable factors that could inform corrective measures to reduce infection rates and improve postoperative recovery.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults (18+) who underwent esophagectomy for cancer between January 1, 2017 and December 31, 2024 and were admitted to intensive care postoperatively, provided they do not oppose use of their data.
Not a fit: Patients under 18, those whose surgery occurred outside the specified dates, those not admitted to ICU after esophagectomy, those who had non-cancer esophagectomy, or anyone who objects to data use will not be included and are unlikely to benefit from this project.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the study could identify modifiable risk factors and care changes that reduce postoperative infections, shorten hospital stays, and improve patient recovery.
How similar studies have performed: Previous single-center and some multicenter cohorts have reported pneumonia and other infections as common and harmful after esophagectomy, but large multicenter retrospective analyses focused on modifiable risk factors remain limited.
