What this trial studies

This clinical trial evaluates the SCThrive intervention, a behavioral self-management program designed for adolescents and young adults with sickle cell disease (SCD). Participants aged 13-21 will engage in an 8-week virtual group intervention supported by a mobile app, focusing on enhancing patient activation and self-management behaviors. The study will compare outcomes between those using SCThrive and those receiving standard care, assessing improvements in daily functioning and emergency room visits. Additionally, the research will explore the impact of social determinants of health on treatment response.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adolescents and young adults aged 13-21 with a confirmed diagnosis of sickle cell disease.

Not a fit: Patients with other chronic diseases, non-English speakers, or those with cognitive or psychiatric disorders may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this intervention could significantly enhance self-management skills and reduce emergency room visits for adolescents with sickle cell disease.

How similar studies have performed: Previous pilot studies have shown promising results with similar behavioral interventions, indicating potential for success in this approach.
