Improving physical performance in older hospitalized patients through personalized nutrition and exercise
The Effect of a Combined Personalized Nutritional Intervention and a Personalized Graded Activity Functional Training Program on Physical Performance in Hospitalized Older Patients, Compared to Usual Care: A Randomized Clinical Trial
This study is testing if personalized nutrition and exercise can help older patients in the hospital improve their physical performance and stay active after they go home.

What this trial studies
This project aims to enhance physical performance in older patients by implementing a personalized nutritional intervention alongside a graded activity functional training program. The intervention begins upon hospital admission and continues post-discharge in a home care setting, supported by an e-health application. The study focuses on addressing the risks of muscle mass decline and decreased physical functioning in hospitalized older adults, which can negatively impact their independence and quality of life. By combining tailored nutrition and exercise, the study seeks to improve outcomes for this vulnerable population.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are individuals aged 65 and older who are admitted to a clinical ward in the Nijmegen area.
Not a fit: Patients who are completely reliant on tube feeding or have severe renal insufficiency may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could significantly enhance the physical health and independence of older patients after hospitalization.
How similar studies have performed: While similar interventions have shown success in healthy individuals and athletes, this approach has not been extensively tested in older hospitalized patients, making it a novel exploration.
