What this trial studies

This initiative engages fathers from families at risk of substance misuse in the Bronx and surrounding areas. Participants will be referred from local child welfare systems and substance use treatment providers, and will be randomly assigned to either receive standard services or enhanced services. The enhanced services include motivational enhancement, referral to the HERO Dads program, contingency management, and case management to support father-child relationships and address substance use issues.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are custodial or non-custodial fathers with at least one child under 18 who are identified as at risk for substance use.

Not a fit: Fathers whose children have all been placed in foster care will not benefit from this program.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this program could significantly improve family dynamics and reduce substance misuse among fathers, leading to better outcomes for children.

How similar studies have performed: While similar approaches have been explored, this specific partnership and program structure is relatively novel.
