What this trial studies
This is a single-center, open-label, randomized controlled trial that compares usual care with the addition of the GERDCare mobile application to support treatment adherence in adults with typical GERD symptoms. The app, developed with input from gastrointestinal experts, offers educational resources, symptom tracking, medication reminders, and direct patient–physician communication. Eligible participants are adults who own a smartphone and can use apps, and they are followed for four weeks after starting GERD treatment. Patients with acute GI emergencies, GI malignancy, severe chronic organ failure, pregnancy, significant alcohol abuse, or mental health issues affecting app use are excluded.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults (≥18 years) with typical GERD symptoms who own a smartphone and are able to use mobile applications, without major acute GI conditions or severe comorbidities, are the ideal candidates.
Not a fit: Patients with acute GI bleeding, GI cancer, severe heart/liver/kidney failure, pregnancy, active alcohol abuse, or cognitive/mental health conditions that hinder app use are unlikely to benefit from this intervention.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the app could improve adherence to GERD treatment and reduce symptom burden and related complications.
How similar studies have performed: Mobile health applications have improved medication adherence in several chronic diseases and pilot work suggests promise for GERD, but large definitive trials in GERD remain limited.
