What this trial studies
This study aims to enhance the EMBED clinical decision support system to improve the administration of buprenorphine for patients with opioid use disorder in emergency departments. Using a Multiphase Optimization Strategy (MOST), the study will implement a factorial trial to test various strategies, including nurse prompts and clinician reminders, to ensure adherence to standard care. The goal is to refine the usability of the decision support interface and workflow to reduce errors and improve treatment initiation for patients. The study will involve multiple phases, including preparation, optimization, and confirmatory stages.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are emergency department patients aged 18 and older with moderate to severe opioid use disorder.
Not a fit: Patients who are under 18 years of age, pregnant, or currently receiving medication for opioid use disorder may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to more effective treatment for patients with opioid use disorder in emergency settings.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown promise in using clinical decision support systems for addiction treatment, indicating that this approach has potential for success.
