What this trial studies

This pilot, prospective, randomized control trial evaluates the effects of a prehabilitation program on the recovery of patients undergoing open surgery for abdominal aortic aneurysms. The study compares functional recovery at three months post-surgery between patients who participate in an outpatient prehabilitation program and those who do not. The prehabilitation protocol includes nutritional support, muscle-building exercises, and cardio-respiratory training, aimed at improving patients' overall functional status and independence in daily activities. Follow-up assessments will be conducted to gather comparative data on recovery outcomes.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are patients diagnosed with an abdominal aortic aneurysm who are scheduled for conventional surgery.

Not a fit: Patients requiring urgent surgical management that does not allow for a prehabilitation protocol may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could enhance recovery and quality of life for patients undergoing major abdominal surgery.

How similar studies have performed: While the concept of prehabilitation is gaining traction, this specific approach in the context of abdominal aortic aneurysm surgery is relatively novel and has not been extensively tested.
