What this trial studies

This observational study aims to identify unusual experiences and psychiatric symptoms in adolescents that indicate a heightened risk for severe mental disorders, particularly psychosis. It will collect data from 1,000 adolescent outpatients across three major urban areas in Finland, utilizing comprehensive national health care registers to assess the predictive value of self-reported symptoms and experiences. The study will also evaluate psychosocial protective factors and risk factors such as trauma and substance use, ultimately developing risk algorithms for clinical use. The findings will lead to improved screening methods and targeted care for at-risk youth.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adolescents starting care in a mental health clinic who have not been previously diagnosed with a psychotic disorder.

Not a fit: Patients with a prior diagnosis of a psychotic disorder may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance early identification and intervention for adolescents at risk of developing severe mental disorders.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown success in identifying risk factors for psychosis using similar approaches, but this study aims to refine and expand upon existing methods.
