Identifying patients at risk of chronic kidney disease after acute kidney injury
Identification of Patients at Risk of Chronic Kidney Disease After Acute Kidney Injury
This study is trying to find out which patients who had serious kidney problems in the ICU might develop long-term kidney disease later on, by checking their kidney health after they leave the hospital.

What this trial studies
This observational study aims to identify patients who are at risk of developing chronic kidney disease (CKD) following an episode of moderate to severe acute kidney injury (AKI) in the intensive care unit (ICU). Participants who experienced AKI will have their blood and urine kidney biomarkers measured within three days of hospital discharge to determine correlations with renal function three months later. The study also seeks to assess the quality of life of these patients at the three-month mark, addressing a significant gap in current risk assessment tools for CKD post-AKI.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are critically ill adult patients who experienced AKI stage II or III while in the ICU and are scheduled for hospital discharge.
Not a fit: Patients with known pre-existing end-stage kidney disease, advanced chronic kidney disease, or those not expected to survive for three months will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved identification of patients at high risk for chronic kidney disease, allowing for timely interventions.
How similar studies have performed: While the approach of using kidney biomarkers to predict CKD risk post-AKI is promising, it is relatively novel and has not been extensively tested in prior studies.
