What this trial studies

This observational study aims to identify novel biomarkers that can help detect occult cancer in patients diagnosed with venous thromboembolism (VTE). It focuses on understanding the relationship between inflammation, hypercoagulability, and cancer, particularly through the study of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). By improving risk prediction models, the study seeks to determine which VTE patients may benefit from more extensive cancer screening. The research is conducted at Danderyd Hospital and Södersjukhuset in Stockholm.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults over 18 years old who have been diagnosed with venous thromboembolism.

Not a fit: Patients who are more than two days post-diagnosis of VTE or cannot provide blood samples at baseline may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to earlier detection of cancer in patients with venous thromboembolism, potentially improving treatment outcomes.

How similar studies have performed: While there have been studies exploring biomarkers in cancer diagnostics, this specific approach focusing on VTE patients is relatively novel.
