How retroperitoneal lymph node dissection affects urination and sexual function

Voiding, Erectile and Ejaculatory Function After Retroperitoneal Lymph Node Dissection for Testicular Cancer

Observational Jagiellonian University · NCT06954233

What this trial studies

This is a prospective observational study that follows adult men undergoing RPLND for testicular cancer with measurements taken before surgery and at scheduled visits up to six months after the operation. Participants complete validated patient-reported outcome measures for urinary symptoms, ejaculatory and erectile function, and quality of life, and undergo non-invasive tests including uroflowmetry and post-void residual ultrasound. The design pairs subjective questionnaires with objective flow and volume measurements to characterize the timing and magnitude of functional changes after RPLND. Data will be used to describe typical recovery patterns and identify factors associated with worse urinary or sexual outcomes.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adult men with testicular cancer who are scheduled to undergo RPLND and can provide informed consent are ideal candidates for this study.

Not a fit: Men with a prior RPLND or those with irreversible preexisting urinary or sexual dysfunction unrelated to their current treatment are unlikely to benefit from this study's findings.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the results could help clinicians predict, counsel about, and manage urinary and sexual side effects after RPLND, improving postoperative care and rehabilitation.

How similar studies have performed: Previous research has established that RPLND commonly affects ejaculation, but prospective, systematic data on effects on urine flow and erectile function are limited, making this partly novel.
