How organs communicate during a heart attack
Systemic Organ Communication in STEMI
Heinrich-Heine University, Duesseldorf · NCT03539133
We will collect clinical data from adults with STEMI to see how different organs respond during and after a heart attack.

What this trial studies
This open-ended, prospective observational cohort will enroll adults presenting with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and systematically collect clinical data. Data collection will focus on routine clinical measures obtained during hospital care and follow-up, such as vital signs, laboratory results, imaging reports, and treatment timelines. The aim is to identify system-level signals or "master switches" that connect myocardial ischemia with responses in other organs and common comorbidities. No experimental treatments are administered as part of the protocol; analyses are observational and intended to generate hypotheses for future work.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults aged 18 or older with a confirmed ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction who can give informed consent are the intended participants.
Not a fit: People under 18, individuals without STEMI, or patients too unstable or unable to consent are not eligible and unlikely to benefit from enrollment.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the findings could reveal biomarkers or patterns that improve risk prediction and help tailor care after STEMI.
How similar studies have performed: Other observational cohorts of myocardial infarction have identified biomarkers and systemic responses, so this approach has produced useful insights even if it has not yet led to major new therapies.
