How common a carotid web is in people aged 15–25
Prevalence of Carotid Web in Youth Assessed by Duplex Sonography: a Cross-Sectional Study
This project will use neck duplex ultrasound to see how often a carotid web appears in people aged 15 to 25.

What this trial studies
This is a cross-sectional, population-based sonographic survey enrolling people aged 15–25 to estimate the point prevalence of carotid web using duplex ultrasound. Images are read with blinded central adjudication and the protocol follows STROBE reporting guidelines for cross-sectional studies. Secondary aims include describing web morphology and laterality, estimating coexisting carotid atherosclerotic changes, measuring inter-observer agreement, and optionally validating ultrasound findings with CTA in a subset. The study is conducted at the University of Ostrava with standardized DUS protocols and centralized image review.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: People aged 15–25 who can give informed consent and who have not had prior carotid surgery, neck irradiation, or known non-web vasculopathy that prevents assessment.
Not a fit: Those outside the 15–25 age range or with prior carotid endarterectomy/angioplasty, neck irradiation, or known vasculopathies that obscure imaging are unlikely to benefit from participation.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the study would clarify how common carotid web is in young people and could inform clinical awareness and future screening or prevention studies.
How similar studies have performed: Prior imaging studies in stroke cohorts have identified carotid web in roughly 2% of symptomatic patients, but dedicated population-based sonographic screening in young adults is novel.
