Investigating the prevalence of carotid web in families

Family Screening for Internal Carotid Diaphragm Dysplasia (Carotid WEB): a Doppler Ultrasound Study

Not applicable Interventional University Hospital, Toulouse · NCT06336083

This study is trying to find out how common carotid web is among family members of patients who have it, to see if there are any genetic links to this condition that can increase stroke risk.

What this trial studies

This study aims to determine the prevalence of carotid web among first-degree relatives of patients diagnosed with carotid web using carotid duplex doppler ultrasound. Carotid web is a rare condition that poses a high risk of stroke, particularly in young adults, and its familial patterns have not been previously established. By examining relatives of affected individuals, the researchers hope to uncover potential genetic factors associated with this condition. The study will include 30 index patients and 60 relatives, all under the age of 65, at Toulouse University Hospital in France.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include first-degree relatives of patients diagnosed with carotid web who are younger than 65 years old.

Not a fit: Patients who are not first-degree relatives of individuals with carotid web or those over the age of 65 may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could identify genetic predispositions to carotid web, leading to earlier detection and prevention strategies for at-risk individuals.

How similar studies have performed: While the familial aspects of carotid web have not been extensively studied, similar approaches in investigating genetic factors in other vascular conditions have shown promise.
