What this trial studies

This pilot study evaluates the effectiveness of the Self-Empowerment Care Model in enhancing independence and quality of life among frail older adults in Hong Kong. The intervention, based on Nordic re-enablement principles, focuses on hydration, exercise, diet, and defecation care over a 12-week period. It employs a quasi-experimental design with 60 participants, comparing outcomes between an intervention group and a control group receiving standard care. Additionally, the study assesses the impact on caregivers' burden and job satisfaction.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are older adults aged 65 years or older who are experiencing functional decline.

Not a fit: Patients with severe cognitive impairment, severe mental illness, or terminal illness may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this intervention could significantly improve the independence and quality of life for frail older adults, while also reducing caregiver burden.

How similar studies have performed: Similar approaches have shown success in other regions, particularly in Japan and Taiwan, but this application in Hong Kong is novel.
