What this trial studies

This project examines the two-way relationship between gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and perinatal depression and tests whether targeted health-education clips can change health behaviors and mood. Participants with GDM will complete structured questionnaires via smartphone at multiple time points and a subset will receive the clip-based intervention to promote self-care. The study will track weight gain, obstetric complications, social support, and health behaviors as potential moderators of the diabetes–depression link. Conducted across major hospitals in Taiwan, the protocol follows participants through pregnancy and into the postpartum period to capture sequential effects.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Pregnant individuals diagnosed with gestational diabetes who are in stable early pregnancy, have no preexisting chronic diseases requiring medication, own a smartphone, and consent to participate.

Not a fit: People with preexisting diabetes before pregnancy, those with significant chronic illnesses requiring ongoing medication, recurrent pregnancy loss, or those unable/unwilling to use a smartphone or the educational materials are unlikely to benefit.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the program could improve self-care, lower depressive symptoms, and reduce pregnancy complications among people with gestational diabetes.

How similar studies have performed: Some non-perinatal studies show bidirectional links between diabetes and depression and benefit from behavioral interventions, but perinatal-specific intervention data—especially from Asian populations—are limited.
