What this trial studies

This clinical trial evaluates the effectiveness of two health education interventions aimed at preventing dental caries and gingivitis in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment. It compares a conventional oral health education approach with a motivational interviewing strategy to encourage sustainable behavioral changes in oral hygiene practices. The study will involve 94 participants aged 13 to 28, who will be monitored over six months for changes in oral health outcomes. Assessments will include the presence of gingivitis, caries, and adherence to the interventions at multiple follow-up points.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adolescents and young adults aged 13 to 28 who are undergoing treatment with fixed orthodontic appliances.

Not a fit: Patients with untreated caries lesions, periodontal diseases, or those with cognitive or motor disabilities may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved oral health outcomes and reduced incidence of dental caries and gingivitis in orthodontic patients.

How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have shown that motivational interviewing can be effective in promoting health behavior changes, suggesting potential success for this approach.
