Genicular nerve ablation before geniculate artery embolization for knee pain relief

Sequential Genicular Nerve Ablation Prior to Geniculate Artery Embolization in Knee Pain Management: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Not applicable Interventional Zagazig University · NCT06514755

What this trial studies

This clinical trial evaluates the effectiveness of performing genicular nerve ablation (GNA) prior to geniculate artery embolization (GAE) in patients suffering from chronic knee pain. Participants will be divided into two groups: one receiving GNA followed by GAE and the other receiving GAE alone. The study aims to measure pain relief using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and assess knee function through the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) at various follow-up intervals. Additionally, patient satisfaction will be evaluated through a structured questionnaire at three months post-procedure.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 18 to 80 with chronic knee pain that has not responded to conservative treatments.

Not a fit: Patients with contraindications to the procedures, recent knee surgery, or severe comorbid conditions may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could lead to improved pain relief and knee function for patients with chronic knee pain.

How similar studies have performed: While the individual procedures have been studied, the sequential approach of GNA followed by GAE is novel and has not been extensively tested in prior studies.
