What this trial studies
This observational study investigates the effects of maternal microbiota during pregnancy and the early colonization of infants' microbiota on long-term health outcomes. It focuses on the interactions between maternal and infant gut microbiomes, host genetics, and environmental factors, aiming to understand their roles in the development of conditions such as obesity, allergic diseases, and neurodevelopmental disorders. The study will collect blood and stool samples from pregnant women and their infants to analyze these interactions and their implications for health. The findings could lead to new strategies for predicting and preventing diseases in later life.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates include pregnant women under 20 weeks of gestation who plan to deliver at the Guangzhou Women and Children's Medical Center.
Not a fit: Patients who are not pregnant or those who refuse to provide blood and stool samples will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide insights into preventing long-term health issues in children by understanding the role of maternal microbiota.
How similar studies have performed: While the microbiome's role in health has been studied, this specific approach focusing on maternal-offspring interactions is relatively novel.
