Exploring the cellular landscape of hip osteoarthritis

Studies on the Complex Molecular Etiology and Cellular Landscape of Hip Osteoarthritis

Observational University of Turku · NCT05278520

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to investigate the complex etiology and cellular landscape of hip osteoarthritis using advanced techniques such as single-cell RNA sequencing and spatial omics. The researchers will analyze cell populations in synovial tissues and blood samples from osteoarthritis patients, comparing them to non-arthritic controls. The study also seeks to identify potential biomarkers for osteoarthritis and differentiate OA endotypes. Additionally, a sub-study will compare the cellular characteristics of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include adult patients with hip osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis who are scheduled for elective total hip arthroplasty.

Not a fit: Patients with a body mass index above 35, those under 18 or over 74, or those with diabetes or metabolic syndrome may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved understanding and potential new biomarkers for hip osteoarthritis, enhancing diagnosis and treatment strategies.

How similar studies have performed: While the approach of using single-cell and spatial omics is innovative, similar studies have shown promise in understanding other complex diseases, suggesting potential for success in this area.

Eligibility criteria

Inclusion Criteria for the main (OA) study:

Cases: Adult patients with osteoarthritis in the hip joint and who are going through an elective total hip arthroplasty.

Controls: Non-arthritis adult patients who are going through a trauma-based emergency total hip arthroplasty.

\----

Inclusion Criteria for the Rheumatoid sub-study:

Adult patients with rheumatoid arthritis in the hip joint and who are going through an elective total hip arthroplasty.

\----

Exclusion Criteria:

* The body mass index must be below 35
* Age \< 18 or \> 74
* The OA patients may not have diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), or metabolic syndrome.

For the Rheumatoid sub-study, the exclusion criteria are the same as above except for the RA.
